Porsche Intermediate Shaft (IMS) So, why do intermediate shafts fail (or rather, why do the bearings fail)? The most technical reason would be, IMS failures cannot be known for sure, in the bearing analysis it was noted that bearings used in the IMS placement are unusual in that they are sealed and have outer race rotation. Bearings found had no grease with light oil in them, also had wear patterns in the ball grooves indicating marginal lubrication due to the relatively low viscosity of motor oil compared to grease. There is a larger bolt used in the IMS that is believed to prevent or help prevent an IMS failure. IPB-Autosport has a solution that can be done without taking the engine apart. We are using the LN Engineering IMS Retrofit Kit
